City issues rules for fences

Posted: Friday, May 18, 2007
The advent of summer means home improvement projects for Sioux Cityans. The city of Sioux City reminds people to call the Permit Center at 279-6226 before undertaking any projects as one phone call could save you time and money.

City staff will be available to answer questions regarding city code requirements and permits.

One frequently asked question is in regard to fences. Although a permit is not needed, the following guidelines need to be followed:

1. Fences can be installed on the property line. A property line may be found by either locating corner pins using a metal detector, or by hiring a surveyor. Most pins are in place but probably buried about 2-3 inches. Sometimes you can find them by digging if you have a good idea where the corners are.

2. There is no definition of the good side or bad side of a privacy fence in the code.

3. Fences should be constructed of materials typically associated with fences.

4. The code does limit the height of fences as follows: A) 42 inches along any street and the first 50 inches back from the front lot line. B) 6 feet in height for the balance of the property.

5. A site triangle should be provided at the corner of corner lots consisting of angling the fence at a point 30 feet back from the corner to provide vision for vehicles at the intersection. The same is true for lots with an alley intersection except the angle starts at 15 feet back.

6. Fences over 6 feet in height require a permit.

7. Always call 1-800-292-8989 (Iowa One Call) before digging any holes for fence posts.
