CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Two buses collided in western Venezuela on Friday, killing at least 17 people and injuring 20.
Venezuela's Civil Protection chief, Col. Antonio Rivero, told The Associated Press by phone that the accident took place on a highway linking Zulia and Lara states. He said it appeared excessive velocity and heavy rains caused the crash.
The death toll could climb because bodies might still be found in the wreckage of the vehicles, Rivero said.
The 20 injured were being treated in hospitals in Barquisimeto and Carora, cities about 175 miles west of the capital of Caracas.
