Hinton six shots short of golf title

Defending champion Hinton turned in the best second-day score, a 311, but the Blackhawks fell six shots short of repeating as Iowa Class 1A boys state golf champion Saturday at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore.

After an opening 327 Friday Hinton was 13 shots back of of Mason City Newman Catholic, but Newman Catholic held on to win, shooting a 318 Saturday to finish at 632.

Hinton finished at 638 and Newell-Fonda was fourth in the nine-team field with a 664.

Hinton senior Josh Solma carded the best Saturday round, a 73, but his 150 total was a shot shy of medalist Jon Tink a sophomore from Waterloo Walnut Ridge Academy.

Tink carded a 72-77--149.

Hinton's David Young, also a senior and the individual medalist last year with a 140, tied for third after shooting 80-75--155. Young tied with Steve Aschinger of Wall Lake View-Auburn (77-78--155) and Chris Reck of East Buchanan (77-78--155).

Austin Vanderhoff of Newell-Fonda carded an 80-79--159 to tie two others for sixth individually.

Also counting for Hinton Saturday were Jamie Smith (84-82--166) and Cory Westphal (86-81--167).

Nate Freed shot 87-84--171 and Adam Freed 90-83--173 for the Blackhawks. Spencer Baak (79-88--167) and Matt Spaulding (85-83--168) were next in line for Newell-Fonda.

Meanwhile, in the Class 2A state tourney at Lake Panorama National Resort, Hampton-Dumont won the team title with 627, 30 shots better than runner-up Solon.

Emmetsburg, the defending champ, was sixth with a 684.

Matt Wennekamp of Monticello was the 2A medalist, shooting 73-73--146 over 36 holes. Orange City Unity Christian freshman Neil Malenke tied for eighth after finishing with a 78-78--156.

In the 3A meet at Spirit Hollow in Burlington, Huxley Ballard won the title with a 643, topping Fairfield by 12 shots.

Storm Lake, with a 328 Saturday, took fourth with a 660 total.

Cody Schweinefus of Decorah was the 3A medalist with a 76-70--146. Aaaron Clausen (81-80--161) and Kyle Nitchals (82-79--161) led Storm Lake.
