Local Foods Market to be toured June 12

Posted: Monday, June 04, 2007
Practical Farmers of Iowa will host a tour of the Floyd Boulevard Local Foods Market from 6 to 8 p.m. June 12. The Sioux City Market brings together producers who believe in values and integrity with consumers who want healthy, humane, homegrown foods, PFI reported. Also, there will be a program to discuss the Nebraska Food Cooperative and the planned Iowa Food Cooperative.

The Floyd Boulevard Local Foods Market is a unique market that includes a restaurant, year-around farmers' market and retail store. All products sold at the market are grown naturally, without the use of genetically modified organisms or toxic substances; animal products must be raised humanely.

"Local, sustainable farmers need a market to sell their products to and the Floyd Boulevard Local Foods Market provides that opportunity by offering fair prices to the farmers and providing the community with good and healthy food. Local foods markets are extremely important to the local foods system movement and the vitality of rural communities," said the Rev. Marvin Boes, PFI member and long-time supporter of the Floyd Boulevard Local Foods Market.

The program for the June 12 event is: 6-6:30 p.m., "finger"” food and socializing; 6:30-7 p.m., tour and presentation on the Floyd Boulevard Local Foods Market (Pat Garrity, executive director); 7-7:30 p.m., presentation on the existing Nebraska Food Cooperative (Randy Wattermann, cooperative president); and 7:30-8 p.m., presentation on the proposed Iowa Food Cooperative (Gary Huber and Jim Clark, PFI staff)

The event is free and open to all, but due to limited capacity and for adequate food preparation, registration is required. Contact Cedar Johnson, cedar@practicalfarmers.org or (515) 232-5661.

This event is sponsored by the Animal Welfare Institute, Frontier Natural Products Co-op, Iowa State University Extension, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Organic Valley, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and the Iowa Network for Community Agriculture.
