Jarzynka among 12 Morningside volleyball recruits

Amber Jarzynka, a 5-11 middle blocker from Blair, Neb., headlines a list of 12 volleyball additions who will play volleyball this fall at Morningside College.

Head coach Rick Pruett's team includes three transfers and nine high school recruits. Jarzynka is among the transfers and will join the Mustangs with junior eligibility as a transfer from Bellevue University.

Jarzynka was an NAIA honorable mention All-American last season who topped the Bruins with 561 kills for an average of 4.38 kills per game to rank 13th nationally. She also led the team with a .327 attack percentage and in blocks with 17 solos and 110 assists for an average of 0.99 per game.

Jarzynka won first-team NAIA Region IV honors last season. She also won first-team Midland Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) honors. She was also named the 2005 NAIA Region IV and MCAC freshman of the year.

Kali Angerman and Michele Burkart are also transferring to Morningside. Angerman, a 5-10 setter who graduated from Sioux City East in 2005, is a transfer from Barton County Community College (Kan.) while Burkart, a 5-4 defensive specialist from Downey, Calif., is a transfer from William Penn, where she played for Pruett before he became the Mustangs' new head coach last winter.

Angerman dealt 593 assists in a 6-2 offense last season and had 1,392 assists as a freshman. Burkart averaged 3.64 digs last season and completed 88.8 percent of her serve attempts with 22 aces.

The high school recruits include:

Christina Blomgren, Albert City, Iowa: The 5-11 middle blocker is a graduate of Sioux Central.

Angie Edwards, Correctionville, Iowa: The 5-5 defensive specialist from River Valley won Class 1A Northwest district honors as a senior. She averaged 3.18 digs and completed 89.3 percent of her serve reception and 86 percent of her serve attempts.

Kristin Hendrix, Treynor, Iowa: The 5-11 middle blocker averaged 1.13 kills and 0.51 blocks for Treynor's Class 2A state tournament team. She also led the team with a .267 attack percentage.

Meggie Mitchell, Lake Park, Iowa: The 6-foot middle blocker had 125 career blocks, the third highest total in Harris-Lake Park history. She had 12 solo blocks and 61 block assists as a senior. She also completed 90.8 percent of her serves with 30 aces.

Melissa Nielsen, Treynor, Iowa: The 5-9 setter had 313 assists as a senior for Treynor's 2A state tournament team. She completed 94.4 percent of her serve attempts and recorded 45 ace serves.

Lindsey Siepker, Laurens, Iowa: The 5-10 setter from Laurens-Marathon had 1,180 assists in her career, the third highest total in school history. She won 1A North Central district honors as a senior and recorded 815 assists, 137 digs, 81 kills, 61 blocks and 32 ace serves.

Kayla Stehlik, Dorchester, Neb.: The 5-10 outside hitter from Dorchester won honorable mention Class D1 all-state honors as a senior.

Megan Suhr, Alta, Iowa: The 5-5 setter/defensive specialist from Alta won first-team Northwest Conference honors as a senior while leading the team to a 16-1 record and the conference title. She had 261 assists. She also completed 86.7 percent of her serve reception attempts and 86.2 percent of her serve attempts. She also plans to compete for Morningside's track and field team. She ran on sprint medley relays that won 1A state titles in 2006 and 2007.

Liz Warren, Omaha: The 5-6 defensive specialist is a graduate of Omaha Marian. She is currently playing libero for a Nebraska Elite Junior Olympic club team from Omaha.
