Meyer Brothers consolidates funeral homes

By Dolly A. Butz, Journal staff writer | Posted: Thursday, June 07, 2007
Meyer Brothers Funeral Homes & Cremation Services has closed two of its locations and consolidated them into one at 6200 Morningside Ave. The newly remodeled building, which features two chapels, opened this week.

Co-owner Cindy Meyer Struve said the closing of the Anderson-Perasso Chapel, 805 10th St., and Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 1111 Morningside Ave. on June 1, was due to space and the fact that the buildings were not accessible for the handicapped.

"Size-wise the chapels weren't as large as our newer facility is," she said. "We just thought it was a good location. It's a growing part of the city."

In 1968 the Anderson Funeral Home was purchased by Meyer Brothers. The Perasso Brothers operation was relocated to the Anderson Funeral Home location and the names were combined to Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home. In 1981 Meyer Brothers opened Siouxland Crematory, the first crematory in the city. The crematory has also been moved to the new location.

In 1958, the company purchased the residence of Judge Foster G. Iddings at 1111 Morningside Ave. The chapel was known as Nelson-Berger's funeral home. It was renamed Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in 2004.

The new location on Morningside Avenue is the former State Farm Insurance Claims Center. It is approximately 10,000 square feet in size and is handicapped accessible.

"The other two were older buildings and not very handicapped accessible," Meyer Strube said. "There was an outdoor ramp if they needed to go to the restroom, or they had to go up four stairs. Our new facility is handicapped accessible."

The two chapels will also allow more people to view a service if there is overflow.

"The facility can hold a gathering of close to 350 people," Meyer Struve said. "If we had overflow into the other chapel from the main chapel ... one of the chapels we do have a camera hooked up, so if we have overflow we can seat people in our other chapel and they can watch on TV both audio and video of what's going on."

In addition to the new location, Meyer Brothers also operates the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd., and the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, 822 Jennings St.
