Briar Cliff offers accounting as evening degree
Posted: Sunday, June 10, 2007
Briar Cliff University is responding to an increasing demand locally for accountants by offering a new weekend/evening bachelor of arts degree program with a major in accounting.
"We anticipate this program to be successful because of market demand and because of Briar Cliff University’s strong reputation in the field of accounting education," Judith Scherer Connealy, director of continuing education and professional studies at BCU, said in a news release.
Briar Cliff’s decision to add an accounting major to its evening degree-completion program is also a result of market demand. George Frangedakis, chair of BCU’s business administration department, said accounting is increasing in popularity as a career choice.
"Our other continuing education programs in business and human resource management are doing well," Frangedakis added. "But I think more students see accounting as an attractive career."
The accounting major in the evening degree-completion program is scheduled to start in the fall. However, evening students interested in pursuing an accounting degree are encouraged to enroll in the major’s support courses as well as the general education course requirements.
All of the accounting classes required for the major will be offered on a two-year cycle. This will allow students who need only the accounting courses to complete the program in two years. Students enrolling in support courses to complete their general education requirements and electives will need more than two years to complete the degree.
Briar Cliff has offered an accounting degree through the evening and weekend program before, but that was more than a decade ago. It was subsequently dropped, Frangedakis said, because the program's popularity waned.
Briar Cliff will offer its full accounting curriculum through the evening and weekend degree completion program. Some of the support courses will be offered online, but each accounting course will be taught in a classroom on the BCU campus.
Students who want financial aid are urged to fill out the Free Application for Student Aid online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The evening/weekend program is offered at a discount, so BCU scholarships are not available to those paying a discounted rate.
