Anderson wins Sioux Valley Amateur Match Play

By Barry Poe Journal sports writer | Posted: Monday, June 18, 2007
CHEROKEE, Iowa -- All good things must come to an end and such was the case with Todd Sapp's reign as champion in the Sioux Valley Amateur Match Play Championship.

J.D. Anderson of West Des Moines defeated former champion Brian Schultz of Le Mars 1-up in the championship match Sunday at Cherokee Golf & Country Club, preventing Sapp from becoming the first player to win three in a row. Schultz earlier beat Sapp by a similar 1-up score in a semifinal.

Both the championship and Sapp's semifinal with Schultz came down the final hole. Such was the case with a majority of the matches in the 73rd staging of Iowa's oldest match play tournament.

The biggest lead Anderson had on Schultz, the 2000 champion, was two holes. Schultz, though, fought back and forced the match to a deciding 18th hole.

Anderson, a Pocahontas native and Wayne State College graduate who works for Pioneer Hybrids in West Des Moines, recently won his third straight Interstate Amateur crown at Two Rivers Golf Club. The talented shotmaker is currently third in the Iowa Golf Association player of the year standings.

Along with his first Sioux Valley match play title, Anderson was also the qualifying medalist, turning in a 5-under-par 67.

To reach the championship match, Anderson downed Brian Lockin of Aurelia, twice a runner-up in this event. Sapp claimed the nine-hole consolation match with a 2 and 1 victory over Lockin.

James DeVoss of Cherokee claimed the first flight championship with a 1-up win over Tom Bohnenkamp of Aurelia. Josh Waring of Lakeland, Fla., won the consolation match 2 and 1 over Justin Siegel of Colorado Springs.

Greg Holmes of Kansas City defeated Eric Sonksen of Des Moines 3 and 2 in the second flight final. Jeff Campbell of Niles, Ohio, beat Nick Peterson of Correctionville 4 and 3 in the consy match.

The third flight went to Jeff Sailor of Moville, who downed T.J. Korver of Orange City 1-up. The consolation match went to Jon Miller of Cherokee, who scored a 4 and 3 triumph over Kurt Taylor of Des Moines.

Ken Slater Jr. of Holstein won the fourth flight 1-up over Al Loebig of Cherokee. Cherokee's Colin Christensen beat Aaron Hember 3 and 2 in the third-place fray.

Jeff Nelson, a Reedsburg, Wis., resident, captured the fifth flight crown 2 and 1 over Kurt Clabaugh. Jim Rodgers of Cherokee topped Jeff Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., 1-up for third place.

Zach Mathers of Sioux City went to the final hole for a 1-up win over Jason Spooner of Cherokee in the sixth flight. Mark Joyce of Des Moines won the consolation match 2 and 1 over Chris Christensen of Cherokee.

The seventh and final flight title went to Eli Ellis of Sheldon with a 3 and 2 win over Scott Finneman of Urbandale. Rich Cook of Cherokee beat Mark McCrea of Correctionville 2 and 1 to claim third place.

A total of 128 players made the cut. A consolation tournament will be held Saturday for those who did not qualify for the regular event.
