Women's ag conference set for West Des Moines

The Iowa Women in Agriculture conference, ''Taking Charge of Your Farm’s Future,'' is scheduled for July 25-26 at the West Des Moines Marriott, 1250 Jordan Creek Parkway. The conference is designed to give ag women the tools they need to deal with the present and plan for the future of their farms.

Sara Wyant, editor and writer for Agri-Pulse Communications Inc., will open the conference on July 25 with the presentation, "Why You Need to Expect the Unexpected: Discover the importance of making financial, retirement and estate planning decisions now.''

On July 26, the general session will feature a presentation led by Karey Claghorn, Iowa deputy secretary of agriculture.

The conference will offer three educational breakout sessions both days, with attendees able to attend two of the sessions each day. On July 25 the sessions are: "Can You Talk the Talk? Better Communication Builds Better Understanding,'' with Ann Jorgensen, retired farm service agency-USDA official and presidential appointee to the Farm Credit Administration, "How to Reach Your Goals: Choose Trusted Advisors to Help Chart Your Course,'' with Dana Wenstrand, owner of IMAGE Professional Training and Consulting, and "Don't be Deterred by Legal Challenges: Today' Decisions Can Help Prevent Tomorrow’s Heartaches,'' with Roger McEowen, director of the ISU Center of Agricultural Law and Taxation, Iowa State University.

On July 26, the sessions are: "Farm Finance 101: Money Matters You Can Bank On'' by Julie McGonegle, director in marketing services for Farm Bureau Financial Services; "What You Need to Know About Passing Down the Farm: Uncle Sam vs. Generation Next,'' by Paul Folkers, executive vice president of Midwest Capital and "Protect Your Assets: Strategies for a Better Night's Sleep" by Cathy Shepherd, insurance search consultant with The Palmer Group.

       To register for the conference, call (515) 251-3202 or log on to {M7www.IowaWomenInAg.org. Registration is $99. You may register at the door but it is advised to register by July 20 to ensure a spot. Rooms for the night of July 25 are available for $89 and must be reserved by July 15. To reserve a room, call (515) 267-1500 and ask for the Iowa Women in Agriculture room block.
