Ida County Fair off to hot start

By Jean Hofmann, Journal correspondent | Posted: Wednesday, July 18, 2007
IDA GROVE, Iowa -- On Monday night the barns were empty and the fairgrounds deserted. But by 8 a.m. Tuesday, the Ida County Fairgrounds sprang to life.

Dry weather has rendered the fairgrounds a bit dusty. Temperatures exceeding 90 this week guarantee Ida County will continue to be the "hot" place to be.

Ida County has had only a quarter- to a half inch of rain since the end of May, so exhibitors have had some extra work to get ready.

The fair opened Tuesday with Exhibit Hall judging and the arrival of the livestock. Little Miss Ida County and the Ida County Queen were crowed as well.

Animals will be weighed today, with livestock judging beginning at 5:30 p.m. The popular skid loader rodeo gets under way at 6 p.m., and at 8 p.m. the talent show begins.

Thursday is show day for sheep, goats and rabbits. The evening attraction is the hog mud wrestling contest at 6:30 p.m.

Beef and poultry take center stage Friday. Antique tractors will also be displayed and the annual tractor pull will start at 6 p.m. The evening ends with a style show and dance extravaganza.

The swine show starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by the barbecue contest. Dog and pet shows unfold Saturday afternoon. Chuckwagon races and the rodeo start at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively.

A worship service is planned at 10 a.m. Sunday, a day also reserved for the overall showmanship award, which happens at noon. The demo derby starts at 5 p.m., followed by a roll-over contest. A dance wraps up fair activities.

Livestock will then be sold at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

The Ida County Fairgrounds is two miles north of Ida Grove on U.S. Highway 59.
