He's 'very happy' living life as an atheist

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- This is a response to the July 14 column by Kathy Yoder headlined “Living Without God Can Make You Sad.” The title implies that if you do not believe in God, you are a sad person.

I believe that one does not have to worship a god to lead a life motivated by ethical behavior, optimism and compassion. That is what I am doing, as an atheist.

" Harry is almost to the finish line with just a few more miles to go. Even though he�s exhausted after running a lifelong race, he still has a little oomph left to get him to the proverbial finish line. He has no doubt that he�ll get there because he�s come this far without any help from God. He prides himself that he doesn�t have to believe in God or worship him to be happy or to be thoughtful, kind and understanding with others. He�s fought for his country, raised a family and took care of an ailing wife without complaining. He�s a good example to friends, neighbors and even strangers. His thoughtfulness wasn�t motivated by ethical behavior, optimism and compassion. He just did it all on his own. How sad for Harry when he crosses the finish line and realizes that he didn�t do it on his own. What�s more heartbreaking is that he refused the greatest gift that was ever given to him.
