JEFFERSON, S.D. -- {M3The 9th Annual Beers 'n Ears charity Bash will be held in Jefferson beginning at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at the home of the sponsors, Doyle and Deb Karpen. The recipient for this year’s event will be the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
The cost is $25 per person which includes a meal of a pulled pork sandwich, "all-you-can-eat" sweet corn and various side dishes. You'll also get a T-shirt and Miller Lite beer (while it lasts). Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided with the meal. Items have been donated by various individuals and businesses for an auction and give-aways. The meal will begin at 6 p.m. and the auction will begin at 8. Meal-only tickets are $15.
The inspiration for the Beers 'n Ears Bash came from an event held during the National American Legion Convention in Minneapolis in the mid 70's. Elmer Iversen, a South Dakota Legionnaire for 50 years, attended the convention. He later implemented the Beers n Ears party as an annual fundraiser for American Legion Post 303 in Hermosa, S.D., where it is still held each year.
The Beers 'n Ears event benefits a different charity each year.
This year’s selection of the June E. Nylen Cancer Center will provide funding for the Resource Room and the Serving our Sisters program. The Resource Room helps patients, families and friends find the information and resources they need. These programs are available during diagnosis, treatment, recovery and beyond. The Serving our Sisters program is a free mammography program that promotes annual screening mammograms for women age 40-49 who need financial assistance to cover the cost of this simple yet vital screening.
Other local organizations that have been recipients of the Beers and Ears proceeds are the Big Sioux Chapter of the Alzheimers organization, the Siouxland Autism Support Group and the Siouxland Blood Bank.
