Measure the tall corn in Sioux Rapids

By Mark C. Johnson Journal correspondent | Posted: Thursday, July 26, 2007
SIOUX RAPIDS, Iowa -- Sioux Rapids, the oldest town in Buena Vista County (established in 1855), may also have the oldest continuous community celebration in the area. This weekend is Tall Corn Days, an affair long-time Sioux Rapids residents say goes back more than 50 years.

Area farmers are invited to bring their long corn stalks to Don's Barber Shop, starting at 8 a.m. Friday to have them measured to get bragging rights for the tallest corn until next year's celebration. The deadline for tall corn entries is noon Friday.

"We are having a new event this year," said Angie Christian, one of the members of the organizing committee. "Saturday at 8 a.m., a 5K Fun Run and Walk will begin and end near the American Legion Community Center on Main Street. Those who pre-registered will receive a Tall Corn Days T-shirt."

Other Friday activities include a Flea Market beginning at 5 p.m. west of the City Park, a sweet corn feed from 5-7 p.m. at the American Legion building and family entertainment from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Historical Building.

Saturday the Flea Market will continue and the Tall Corn Days Parade starts at 10 a.m. There will be kids inflatable games at the library at 11 a.m. and a Masons lunch at noon. Later in the evening there will be a fireman's dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the park, along with a midnight swim from 9 p.m. to midnight at the community pool and fireworks starting at 10 p.m.

Sunday features a softball tournament, an alumni banquet, a community church service and a mud volleyball tournament.
