SPENCER, Iowa-- Eaton Corporation officials had good news for about 150 employees in Spencer this week, with the announcement that a planned reduction in the workforce would not happen at least in the near future.
In an effort to compete more effectively in the global market, Eaton had announced almost a year ago that the Spencer jobs would be moved to Reynosa, Mexico by the end of this year. But in a statement issued this week, Spencer plant manager Randy James said "growth in business is an opportunity for us to drive further improvement in delivery and manufacturing efficiency, with the goal of keeping these product lines here."
The majority of the cuts were to come from 102 temporary positions, with just 48 regular full-time jobs tentatively cut in the August 2006 announcement. The plant listed about 450 jobs at the time.
While James explained that every operation in his company is continually reviewed, he explained that "We can never say with certainty, at any location, that product lines will never be moved, because global markets, as well as our competitors, are always changing."
Eaton Corporation is a diversified industrial manufacturing company with 62,000 employees, and sales of $12 billion, annually, to customers in 125 countries.
