Are we a bilingual nation?

Posted: Wednesday, August 15, 2007
I am tired of all that's being printed in both English and Spanish. Have we become a bilingual nation? What percentage of the USA population are Latinos? Why are they being catered to?

" Rhievnarsy, things being printed in both languages isn't really the big picture here! It's the immigration problem as a whole and how America is being brought down by illegals! Don't you read the news? There are places in this country where illegals are given the same rights as citizens. Why is America catering to immigrants? "

" After looking over the Arbitron ratings for the Radio industry, I noticed a few things. In Houston, two of the top five stations are hispanic. In New York City, the #1 market in America, two of the top five stations are hispanic. In Los Angeles, CA, the #2 market in the country, four of the top seven are all hispanic, including the number one station in the market. Here in Sioux City, look at the rapid ratings advance for KWSL who changed format just a couple of years ago and has gone from a 4-share to a 9-share with their all hispanic format. The Arbitron ratings list over 11% of the population as hispanic. I remember when I moved here just ten years ago, that number was 1 percent. Are we becoming a bilingual nation? I would say yes. "

" If you see Spanish printed in a store, it's because they want to have happy customers, if a hispanic person doesnt understand something, then they will leave without having the full "Satisfied Customer Experience" I'm guessing that those store managers think that its worth the extra ink to have these irresponsible hispanics smile and say "wow, they really do want my business" That is all... why start this argument over this little thing? Also it saves time! if a Spanish-speaking customer tries to ask for something to an "English-only employee" how would each other feel? it's just to avoid frustration and time wasted. Its better to have them figure it out by themselves. They are not taking over the country by having signs printed in spanish. Also ask the Journal why they have a Spanish-only publication? are they in on it? or is it just business? "

" KEITH, Thank you for your time to research this information. Everyone should know this stuff, speak out to others, and vote accordingly. We must be pro-active, and address this issue at all levels. Breeding like flies doesn't accomplish anything other than putting up numbers. Thanks but we prefer quality to quantity. These people don't know any more than rats, as reflected in their breeding habits.Over populated like mexico, is where we will end up! "

" I agree. If something isn't done history will repeat itself. It seems like that would be the only way to remedy the problem. It's B.S. that everything is in 2 languages. I get so disgusted when I see things in both languages. When I was registering my kids the lady asked me if I needed an eng or span envelope. I felt like slappin her! It's ridiculous. It seems like if I want my children to succeed then I'm gonna have to allow them to learn spanish or they'll get left behind. It's sad to say but it's the truth! America is changing people, there is nothing we can really do about it other than to adapt and I refuse! "
