Bridal shop owner closes retail store
By Travis Coleman, Journal Staff Writer | Posted: Wednesday, August 22, 2007
Simply Elegant Bridal has closed its shop on Floyd Boulevard, six months after the owner opened the store amid more than 30 customer complaints from her previous dress store in Minnesota.
A message delivered by store owner Carrie Aasen to the Journal Tuesday reads "As of August 21, we have downsized our business and have closed the retail store front. We will continue our business in the Siouxland area and will be concentrating on wedding planning, wedding and event decoration rentals and referral services."
The notice also says customers can e-mail the business if they've made a wedding wish list and want it forwarded to them. In an interview with the Journal on Saturday, Aasen denied customer reports that said she was closing her store that's located in Randall's Formal Wear. Randall's owner, Adrian Hanson, chose not to comment on the closure.
Aasen, also known as Carrie Hamann, started Simply Elegant in February, the same month she was evicted from her previous shop in Sauk Rapids, Minn. It's there that Sauk Rapids police are investigating 38 complaints against Aasen and her business, This Side of Heaven. Customers are accusing Aasen of not providing dresses they've bought and that they also couldn't reach her when they tried to contact her.
Sioux City police haven't received any complaints from customers but last Friday, police were called to remove a man from the store who was upset at Aasen, said Lt. Marti Reilly. The man was shouting about his stepdaughter not receiving a dress but it wasn't known if he or his stepdaughter had even ordered an item from Aasen, Reilly said. When police arrived, the man had left the store.
In Sauk Rapids, police have finished their investigation and the Benton County Attorney's Office will deliberate for up to a week on whether charges against Aasen will be pursued. Despite the possible charges, Sioux City police aren't investigating her business until they get a complaint from a customer in Sioux City.
In the message to her customers, Aasen said "We would like to thank the 100's (sic) of customers that have visited Simply Elegant Bridal since our move here in March. We sincerely appreciate your patronage and have enjoyed doing business with you."
Aasen also said people can book their wedding with Simply Elegant by visiting her Website, www.siouxcitybridal.com.
