Former head of CIETC could lose St. Charles house

Posted: Saturday, August 25, 2007
DES MOINES (AP) -- The Madison County home owned by the former head of a scandal-ridden job training agency will be auctioned off unless outstanding mortgage payments are paid by September.

Ramona Cunningham's house in St. Charles will be sold at a sheriff's sale sometime after Thanksgiving unless she deals with more than $7,500 in back payments for the home, according to Madison County court papers. She hasn't made any payments to the mortgage company this year.

Cunningham is among five former employees of the Central Iowa Employment and Training Consortium who face federal charges stemming from a state audit last spring that revealed $1.3 million in excess compensation paid to top executives. A trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 29.

Cunningham, the agency's former chief executive, moved to Louisiana after she was removed from CIETC in April 2006. She couldn't be reached for comment Thursday.

The home mortgage was used to ensure payment of Cunningham's lawyer, William Kutmus.

Kutmus said he didn't plan to leave the case because of the foreclosure.

"I'm just going to wait in line," Kutmus said. "I'm not sure whether there will be anything left or not."

According to Madison County records, the 2,124-square-foot house built in 1880 is assessed at $114,200.

CitiMortgage Inc. filed foreclosure papers last month, and company attorney Theodore Boecker said Cunningham has until Sept. 25 to respond to newspaper ads announcing the foreclosure. If Cunningham doesn't take action, CitiMortgage will seek possession in October and sell the house at auction in December.
