Preuett's Mustangs debut with wins at Red Raider Classic

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- New Morningside College volleyball coach Rick Pruett had a successful debut Friday at the Red Raider Classic.
Cara DeStigter had 14 kills while leading the Mustangs to a 30-21, 35-33, 30-23 sweep over Waldorf. Amber Jarzynka hammered 19 kills as Pruett's squad upset 17th-ranked Georgetown College 30-26, 30-28, 20-30, 30-24.
Andra Pedersen and Cassie Cheever each recorded 12 kills for Morningside in the sweep over Waldorf. Jarzynka, an NAIA honorable mention All-American last year at Bellevue University, added 11 kills, two solo blocks and two block assists.
Setters Kali Angerman and Katie Kotlik recorded 37 and 15 assists, respectively. Double-digit dig totals came from Jericho Johnson (19), Angerman (12) and Megan Tuttle (11).
Cheever recorded 15 kills in the Mustangs' balanced attack against Georgetown. DeStiger added 12 while Pedersen and Catie Bobier each had 10. Angerman had 60 assists and four ace serves.
Johnson led the defensive effort with 20 digs. Angerman had 14 digs, Bobier added 12 while Cheever had three ace serves, one solo block and four block assists. DeStigter and Pedersen each recorded two solo blocks and one block assist.
Dordt, currently ranked 22nd in the NAIA poll, rallied for a 27-30, 30-14, 30-14, 30-27 win over Mayville State at the Red Raider Classic. Setter Emily Van Voorst dished 57 assists while Larissa Veldhuizen had 16 kllls. Kendra Potgeter had 14 kills while Dorinda Hibma added nine.
Liz Van Voorst topped the defense with 26 digs. Hibma added 13.
Northwestern opened with a 30-17, 30-22, 30-27 sweep over Valley City State. Details from the match were not available.
Northwestern faced College of the Southwest while Dordt met Georgetown late Friday night. Results weren't available when this issue of the Journal went to press.
The Red Raider Classic continues today as Morningside faces College of the Southwest and Valley City State. Dordt will face Valley City State and Peru State while Northwestern will play Peru State and Waldorf.
