WIT and U of I form partnership
Posted: Saturday, September 01, 2007
Western Iowa Tech Community College and the University of Iowa have formed a partnership that will transform the student transfer process between the two institutions.
Under the 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan, students in select majors will be able to earn an associate of arts degree in two years at WIT and then transfer to the U of I where they will earn a bachelor’s degree after an additional two years of study.
The plan differs from previous transfer arrangements between the two institutions in that it provides student participants with a strategic, personalized plan for graduation within four years. The core innovation of the plan is an in-built advising system which ensures that students make the appropriate and necessary curricular selections to achieve this goal.
In addition to strategic advising, 2 Plus 2 participants will be provided with access to U of I online services and library databases, internship networks and career-planning resources. They also will be eligible to receive a U of I student identification card that provides discounted admission to select U of I cultural and athletic events.
Program participants who graduate from Western Iowa Tech with a high grade point average will be able to apply for a limited number of scholarships that are being offered exclusively to 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan students.
Matt Thomsen will coordinate the 2 Plus 2 advising for WIT.
"This is one of the most exciting developments in the history of the partnership between Western Iowa Tech and the University of Iowa," Thomsen said. "The 2 Plus 2 guaranteed program solidifies that partnership by providing students with an unbeatable opportunity to advance their education. And, what is even more important, it removes the uncertainties that often surround the transfer process."
Thomsen already has enrolled three students in the plan and has the capacity to enroll any current student who has earned fewer than 30 credits at WIT and is enrolled in one of the eligible majors.
High school students, non-traditional students and other prospective students who wish to learn more about the 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan, including the eligible majors, should contact Thomsen at (712) 274-8733, extension 4207, or by e-mail at thomsem@witcc.edu.
The University of Iowa’s partnership with Western Iowa Tech is part of a wider effort by UI to extend 2 Plus 2 eligibility to students at all Iowa’s community colleges.
