Chargers win pair at St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- It didn't bother Briar Cliff's volleyball team, playing back-to-back matches Friday at the St. Ambrose Tournament.

Shortly after a 30-16, 30-19, 30-20 sweep over Trinity Christian (Ill.), Coach Mary Schroeder-Miller's Chargers hiked their season record to 3-4 with a 23-30, 30-26, 18-30, 31-29, 15-11 triumph over Quincy (Ill.), an NCAA Division II university.

Quincy waited one full match following a five-game win over Great Plains Athletic Conference school Hastings College. Briar Cliff is now 1-1 against Division II opponents this season.

Setters Nicolle Donovan and Kayla Bessmer dished 25 and 16 assists, respectively, in the victory over Quincy. Micaela Borer had 16 kills while Alex Anstine added 12.

Kate Boettcher had 28 digs while Anstine added 25. Geri Heimann recorded nine block while Anstine had two ace serves.

Donovan had 30 assists for the Chargers in the sweep over Trinity whlie Bessmer added 12. Nicole Hoogeveen had 14 kills while Borer added eight. Heimann, Anstine and Whitney McCollum each recorded seven.

Boettcher topped the defense with 22 digs while Anstine added 20. Donovan and Heimann each had four blocks.

Briar Cliff continues the tournament today, facing St. Ambrose at 11 a.m. and Ashford at 1 p.m.
