Republicans say Daub likely to announce he's running

Posted: Sunday, September 16, 2007
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Nebraska Republicans widely expect former Congressman Hal Daub to enter the Senate race Monday, joining a field that includes Attorney General Jon Bruning and Schuyler businessman Pat Flynn, both Republicans.

Daub has scheduled two days of appearances across the state to make his announcement.

"I don't think he's going to take a two-day tour to say he's not going to run," Gov. Dave Heineman said Saturday.

Former state GOP Chairman David Kramer agreed: "You don't have an 11-city tour to announce you're not running."

Republicans gathered in Lincoln Saturday to dedicate their state headquarters to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns, also mentioned as a possible Senate candidate. Johanns won't say whether he's interested in the seat.

Daub was set to appear at airports in 11 Nebraska cities over the two-day span, starting Monday in Scottsbluff and ending Tuesday evening in South Sioux City. During the trip, Daub will also visit North Platte, Grand Island, Lincoln, Omaha, Beatrice, Hastings, Kearney, Columbus and Norfolk.

Speculation about who's in and who's out of the Nebraska race for U.S. Senate has run high for months but is expected to shake out soon. Sen. Chuck Hagel announced earlier this week that he won't defend his seat in 2008.

Democrats are hoping former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey returns to Nebraska from New School University in New York, where he is president, and enters the race. Kerrey has said he's considering it.

Daub spent the past four months on a "listening and learning tour" of the state's 93 counties. He resigned his position as GOP National Committeeman in August to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.

Daub served in the House as 2nd District representative from 1981-89, and was Omaha's mayor, 1995-2001. In 2002, he was appointed by President Bush to a six-year term as chairman of the Social Security Advisory Board.

Daub is a partner in the law firm of Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin in Omaha and Washington, D.C.
