NORFOLK, Neb. -- Fire caused extensive damage early Thursday to a Norfolk. The Hillary Field family, who own and occupy the home at 402 E. Maple St., were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector, however, and they escaped the house without injury.
The Norfolk Fire Division was dispatched to the basement fire at 3:21 a.m. A call back was initiated for all Norfolk firefighters to assist with the fire. En route to the scene, responding units were advised that there was fairly significant smoke in the house.
Firefighters found moderate smoke coming from the basement area of the house and light smoke on the main floor. Interior attack crews found that a dehumidifier had malfunctioned in a basement room and had started on fire, firefighters said. The fire had spread to a closet door and a wall. There was minor fire damage in the room of origin and heavy smoke damage in that room. There was moderate smoke damage to the rest of the house. Firemen said smoke damage was limited in the rest of the house due to the fact that the door to the room where the fire started was closed.
Investigation into the cause of the fire found that the dehumidifier malfunctioned and ignited the closet door and wall.
Damage was estimated at $7,500.
There were no injuries to firefighters, 24 of whom responded to the call back.
