Annual cardiology conference will be Oct. 17

Mercy Medical Center -- Sioux City, Cardiovascular Associates and St. Luke's Regional Medical Center will co-sponsor the 23rd annual Cardiology Conference from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Sioux City Convention Center.
The annual conference for physicians, nurses and other health care professionals seeks to provide the most current information in the diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and medical management of cardiovascular disease.
Daniel Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, will discuss the impact of inflammation on the heart. He will also talk about the major risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis.
James S. Forrester, M.D., Burns and Allen professor of cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and professor of medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles, will speak on the topic of commonality in pathogenesis of diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and coronary artery disease. He will also discuss important changes and current controversies in coronary artery disease management.
Christopher C. Erickson, M.D., associate professor in the Joint Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Creighton University Medical Center and Children's Hospital in Omaha, will present a session on pediatric electrophysiology. He will describe the newest ablation and mapping techniques in that field and will discuss ICD implants in young patients.
Panithaya Chareonthaitawee, M.D., FACC, FAHA, assistant professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., will present a 2007 update on non-invasive imaging. Chareonthaitawee will focus on clinically relevant developments in echocardiographic, nuclear, CT and MRI techniques, including hybrid imaging.
Richard Gitter, M.D., a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon for Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgeons at Mercy Medical Center -- Sioux City, will discuss remote endarterectomy procedures. He will talk about alternatives to traditional bypass procedures and will also discuss the concept of "shelf" at the removed distal edge of arterial plaque.
Continuing education credit will be available for physicians, nurses, pre-hospital personnel and other health care professionals.
The cost for the one-day conference is $85 for physicians and midlevel providers and $75 for all other health care professionals if registrations are postmarked by Oct 10. Late registration fees will be $10 more after that date.
