Sleep-Out plans will be announced Tuesday
Posted: Saturday, September 29, 2007
Siouxland Sleep-Out organizers will gather at noon Tuesday at Community Support Services, 205 Fifth St., to announce plans for their third annual event to end homelessness.
The evening of Friday, Nov. 16, will find many volunteers from Siouxland and elsewhere camped in boxes, sleeping bags and tents at Lewis and Clark Park. The organizers predict 300 sleepers that night and estimate raising $50,000 for area shelters.
Announcing plans Tuesday for the Siouxland Sleep-Out will be Mayor Craig Berenstein, Councilman Jim Rixner, Community Support Services director Kim Fischer-Culver and Sleep-Out director Willie Delfs. Sleep-Out participants from 2005 and 2006 will discuss those adventures.
The 2007 organizers are pleased to announce that "Sleep-Out Bob" Fisher will be in Sioux City Nov. 16 to join the Siouxland Sleep-Out. He was awarded the National Governors’ Award for Community Service in 2005 and has helped with many homeless awareness events throughout the United States.
Fisher started a major initiative in his Minneapolis area community in 1995 by camping one winter
in his front yard. Other sleepers will include Lyle Schwery, Iowa’s Homeless Program coordinator from Des Moines and many community leaders and youth groups from the tri-state area.
Anyone wanting to sleep out or to learn more about the many issues involved are invited to join Tuesday's event or phone Mike Wood at (712) 255-1691.
