Local officials push for federal funds for '10 Special Olympics

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Local officials in Lincoln are hoping for federal help when it comes to staging the 2010 Special Olympics.
Wendy Birdsall, president of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, says Ames, Iowa received 4 million dollars to host the 2006 games. She says Lincoln is hoping for a similar amount.
Local officials pushed for the money during a two-day visit to Washington this week.
Birdsall says the chamber was originally hoping the money could be used to develop sports fields near Haymarket Park, but the timing doesn't make that realistic.
Local officials need to raise about 6 million dollars for the games. Some events will take place in Omaha.
