For each of the 58,256 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, a life was cut tragically short. In Siouxland, a search for the names of veterans whose names are listed on "The Wall" has yielded a list of 70.
When the half-scale replica of this national memorial, "The Wall That Heals", visits South Sioux City on Oct. 18-21, family, comrades, classmates and co-workers are invited to honor their loved ones by participating in the Reading of the Names to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 20.
During the ceremony, each name will be read and a family member, friend or volunteer will hold a candle to honor that individual veteran's service and sacrifice. The ceremony also will include a prayer by a military chaplain and the playing of Taps by Buglers Across America volunteers.
Siouxlanders with a connection to a veteran whose name is listed on The Wall are invited to participate in the ceremony. Of the more than 58,000 names on the Memorial 1,442 are recorded as being from Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. Family and friends living in Siouxland who may have a connection to a veteran listed on The Wall from another state are also welcome to participate.
Searches for the names and cities of veterans on The Wall can be done on The Virtual Wall on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Web site, www.vvmf.org. Individuals with information on local Vietnam veterans or those wishing to participate in the Reading of the Names are asked to contact Mary McNamara at thewallthathealsssc@cableone.net or (712) 281-5623.
