IAICU names Gary Steinke new president

DES MOINES -- The Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities announced Tuesday that Gary Steinke will become president of the association Jan. 1, 2008.
Steinke currently is executive director of the Iowa Board of Regents. He will succeed John Hartung, who will retire Dec. 31. Steinke will begin his tenure with IAICU Nov. 1 to ensure continuity in the position.
"Independent colleges and universities form a very important sector of higher education in Iowa," said John Reynders, chair of IAICU and president of Morningside College. "We are very pleased to have attracted someone of Gary's caliber to serve as president of our association. With his extensive experience in the workings of state government, we believe he will be a most effective advocate and leader for Iowa's independent institutions."
Steinke, 49, has served as executive director of the Board of Regents since 2004. For 10 years before that he was assistant to the president and director of governmental relations for Iowa State University. Earlier, he worked for the Iowa Legislature and was on the staff of Gov. Terry Branstad. Steinke is a native of DeWitt and a lifelong Iowan. He holds degrees from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and Drake University in Des Moines.
