Mom suspected of trying to sneak knife to jailed son

Posted: Monday, October 08, 2007
KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) -- On the same day her son was sentenced, a woman was arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle a knife to him in the Buffalo County Detention Center six weeks ago.

Gail Axtell, 51, is suspected of trying to sneak the knife to her son during an August jail visit.

She was arrested on a warrant Thursday, the same day Mike Axtell, 36, was sentenced to 10 years in the Nebraska Department of Corrections for being a habitual criminal and for felony possession of methamphetamine.

Gail Axtell was not in custody Sunday, having bonded out of the detention center.

She took clothing, including tennis shoes, to the detention center on Aug. 18 for Mike Axtell

s Aug. 20 trial. A corrections officer said she found a 4-inch serrated steak knife in one of the shoes.

Inmates are allowed to wear their own clothes during trials to prevent influencing the jury.

Gail Axtell told police on Aug. 23 that she was the only person to have access to the shoes before dropping them off at the jail.

The charge of introducing escape implements is a Class I misdemeanor. If convicted, Gail Axtell faces up to one year in jail and a fine.
