Crofton's Merkel wins state golf crown

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Dana Merkel of Crofton captured the Nebraska Class C girls state individual golf title at Riverside Golf Club here Tuesday.
Merkel, who had the low round of the day with a 75 on Monday, followed that up with an 80 in the second round for a 155 total. Katie Keiser of Gothenburg, the runner-up finisher, shot 80-80--160.
Valentine clipped Battle Creek 735-737 for the Class C team title. Crofton wound up fifth at 769 while Hartington Cedar Catholic was 12th at 856 and Norfolk Catholic 16th at 895.
Battle Creek's counters were Paige Berry, 10th individually at 88-86--174, Danielle Kuchar, 11th at 89-86--175, Megan Finke (94-88--182) and Alexandria Wiemers (102-104--206).
Valentine improved 21 strokes from the first to second rounds while Battle Creek trimmed nine strokes off its opening-round total.
Besides Merkel, Crofton also counted Jana Schieffer (108-91--199), Molly Zavadil (101-106--207) and Courtney Foxhoven (108-103--211).
Hartington Cedar Catholic's counters were Rebecca Dreesen (107-103--210), Caitlyn Hoesing (108-104--212), Katelyn Eickhoff (111-105--216) and Dana Leise (113-105--218).
Norfolk Catholic was led by Isabella Baldacci with 100-90--190. Alison Dinslage shot 108-105--213, Hilary Smith 109-106--215 and Sydney Jundt 138-139--277.
Omaha Marian defeated Norfolk in a playoff for the Class A team title at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course here. Beatrice won the Class B team title at Indiana Head Golf Club.
