The Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedmann Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation, also known as the Family Practice Center, 2501 Pierce St., for a project that will support the study and care of diabetic Native American women during pregnancy and after delivery.

The Siouxland Medical Education Foundation is a family practice residency program affiliated with the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. It provides obstetrical services to Native Americans of the Omaha Tribe in Macy, Neb., and the Winnebago Tribe in Winnebago, Neb, and through a clinic at the Cittenton Center in Sioux City. Native Americans are knownto have a much higher incidence of Type II diabetes and gestational diabetes than the average American population.

Information and data will be gathered from this population. The knowledge gained from this grant project will be used to help with patient education prior to pregnancy and during pregnancy, monitoring of their ongoing health care during pregnancy, and follow-up care after delivery.

Dr. Merle Muller will serve as the project director. Muller has been with the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation since 1991 as an associate director.

" Whoever you are "get rid of the swine" you are a coward. This disease is a national problem not just an Indian problem. While I agree they are very selfish people who take and take and take but never seem to be responsible for their own people or situation. You can't just assume the women is fat because of her culture. The government provides the food, exercise, and education for these people and I am sure what they receive is fine. It is not her fault. Be supportive. "

" it needs to be a healthy life style first..the diet changed when such leaders such as Sitting Bull stated " I wonder what will become of my young warriors once they have partaken of the strong drinks and the sweet meats now that the buffalo is gone" White flour and sugar aka processed foods are the culprit. Other cultures don't have this disease because of their diet. good luck , use the wisdom of the elders as you may save your loved ones! "
