Grant supports care of diabetic Native American women

The Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedmann Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation, also known as the Family Practice Center, 2501 Pierce St., for a project that will support the study and care of diabetic Native American women during pregnancy and after delivery.
The Siouxland Medical Education Foundation is a family practice residency program affiliated with the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. It provides obstetrical services to Native Americans of the Omaha Tribe in Macy, Neb., and the Winnebago Tribe in Winnebago, Neb, and through a clinic at the Cittenton Center in Sioux City. Native Americans are knownto have a much higher incidence of Type II diabetes and gestational diabetes than the average American population.
Information and data will be gathered from this population. The knowledge gained from this grant project will be used to help with patient education prior to pregnancy and during pregnancy, monitoring of their ongoing health care during pregnancy,and follow-up care after delivery.
Dr. Merle Muller will serve as the project director. Muller has been with the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation since 1991 as an associate director.
