The Rev. Doug and Liz Searle will talk about the tightrope walked by missionaries serving with Global Ministries in China.

The Searles will speak at the First Congregational United Church of Christ , 4600 Hamilton Blvd., Thursday, Nov. 1.

The Searles, along with son, Mick, 14, will speak in the Fellowship Hall for a 6 p.m. supper and a 6:30 p,m. program.

Missionaries are not permitted to openly preach in China. The Searles teach English to hundreds of university students in classes and through satellite transmissions -- and try to serve others through the example of their lives.

For six years, the Searles have worked in China's western Sichuan Province to support capacity-building programs for three minority peoples who live in what was Kham or East Tibet.

Their work serves Tibetan, Yi and Qiang minorities as well as Han Chinese and includes short- and long-term training programs for rural school teachers, greenhouses to provide vegetables to school children at high altitudes, cooperatives for Tibetan weaving women, school bag and shoes programs, scholarships for high school and university disadvantaged youth and much more.

The Searles also have worked with an English training program in the language of faith for seminary professors and pastors and with an international choir that sings in local Chinese churches in many languages.

Nov. 1, the Searles will present their perspective of the important, evolving Chinese culture.

Doug and Liz Searles are sponsored by Common Global Ministries, a combined witness of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ.

A freewill offering will be taken to reimburse the Christian Church in the Upper Midwest for the Searles' transportation expenses. They will be driving their personal car more than 3,500 miles during their visit to Iowa. Collections in excess of expenses will be forwarded to Global Ministries.
