Event will highlight research at USD

Posted: Monday, October 22, 2007
VERMILLION, S.D. -- In recognition of its continued growth as a major research institution, the University of South Dakota will present "Painting, Pestilence & Politics" during President’s Research Day Thursday at the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre.

President’s Research Day will showcase some of USD’s most creative activities and niche research. The event begins at 2 p.m. and features three presentations: "Art, the Hidden Asset" by Cory Knedler, M.F.A., and John Day, M.F.A.; "Questioning Leadership: Traditional & Translational Approaches" by William Anderson, Ph.D., and "Emerging Infectious Threats, a Gram-Positive Perspective" by Keith Weaver, Ph.D.

At 5:30 p.m., President James W. Abbott will honor researchers from USD with the 2007 President’s Research Excellence awards during a ceremony at Inman House.

In addition to President’s Research Day on Thursday, the USD National Advisory Committee for Research will conduct its second campus visit since the committee’s formation in 2006. This committee reviews USD’s programs in research, creative activity and commercialization and assesses progress toward the goals of USD’s Strategic Plan 2007-2012. Comprised of 14 members from academia, government and the community, the committee will make its recommendations to the administration for research improvement and advancement following Thursday’s review.

"Through the work of this committee along with the activities of President’s Research Day, USD is better positioned to understand and respond to state needs as well as national challenges," explained Laura Jenski, Ph.D., vice president for research, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

"USD’s goal is to achieve national prominence in select research and creative areas that benefit the regional economy, contribute to quality of life in the state and advance our nation," Jenski stated.
