Students named to Junior High Honor Band

The 40th annual Northwest Iowa Junior High/Middle School Honor Band Festival will take place Nov. 3 in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Approximately 400 seventh and eighth grade musicians from 50 northwest Iowa schools auditioned earlier this month for places in one of two equal bands.

The two honor bands will rehearse during the day and present a concert at 6 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Storm Lake High School gymnasium. Admission for the concert is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets for the concert can be purchased at the door.

Guest directors for the honor band festival will be John Aboud, band director from Algona, Iowa, and Paul Schilf from Augustana College in Sioux Falls.

Students from Sioux City Community Schools selected for the Northwest Iowa Junior High Honor Band Festival include:

East Middle: Emily Deming and Emilie Poznanski, clarinet; Nicole Hanson, bass clarinet; Ryan Bliven and Betsy Ehmcke, alto saxophone; Jordan Gulbronson, trumpet; Levi Weber, horn; Amber Bock, trombone; Lucas Wacker and Drew Ohlendorp, euphonium; and Cody Hogan and Devin Klink, percussion.

North Middle: Diamond Denney, Catherine Lippke and Katy Wolfe, flute; Josh Kaneversky and Amy Samuelson, clarinet; Gabe Scoville, baritone saxophone; Chris Beck, Issa Ford and Dean Welte, trumpet; Jake Kaplan, trombone; Garen Merritt, tuba; Jodie Huju, string bass and Joseph Ewing and and Neil Vezeau, percussion.

West Middle: Alexandria Cook and Anna Shanafelt, flute; Kara Groetken, Aubrey Hill, Ashton Knepper and Emily Maurer, clarinet; Lindy Pedersen, bass clarinet; Natalie Engle and Hannah Houts, alto saxophone; Mike Corrie, tenor saxophone; Angela Meyer and Allie Norby, baritone saxophone; Amanda Oberman, horn; Torrey Brown, trumpet; and Aleka Heilmann, euphonium.

The following students were chosen for the Iowa All-State Middle School Honor Band:

East Middle: Emily Deming, clarinet and Amber Bock, trombone.

North Middle: Josh Kanerversky, clarinet.

West Middle: Alexandria Cook, flute; Hannah Houts, alto saxophone; Mike Corrie, tenor saxophone, and Allie Norby, baritone saxophone.

The Iowa All-State Middle School Honor Band will take place May 8 at the Hotel Fort Des Moines in conjunction with the Iowa Band Directors Spring Conference.

Students from Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools selected for the Northwest Iowa Junior High Honor Band Festival include:

{M3          {M3 Mater Dei:{M3 Thomas Auen, trumpet; Mary Chicoine, clarinet, and Robbie Neswick, clarinet.

            {M3Holy Cross:{M3 Mike Heffernan, clarinet, and Jacob Nothdurft, trumpet.

            Jacob Nothdurft also earned the additional honor of being selected for the All-Iowa Eighth Grade Honor band to take place in May of 2008 in Des Moines.

Jonathon Lockling, an eighth grade student at Siouxland Community Christian Academy, also has been selected to participate in the Northwest Iowa Junior High Honor Band Festival. He plays trombone.
