Darfur torch relay makes stop in Omaha
Posted: Tuesday, October 30, 2007
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Abdelheamid Mohammed says he feels safe in Omaha but worries about the family he's left behind.
The 35-year-old fled Darfur three years ago with his wife and three children. He helped carry a torch through Omaha Monday as part of the Dream for Darfur Olympic Torch Relay.
The relay hopes to bring attention to problems in Darfur and pressure China to use its influence to help. China is hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics.
More than 200,000 people have died and 2.5 million have been uprooted since ethnic African rebels took up arms against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government in 2003.
The first torch was lit near Darfur in Chad. It is scheduled to travel through the United States and other countries before arriving in China in January.
