Posted: Sunday, November 04, 2007
STORM LAKE, Iowa -- Mike Amick, Cody Pierce and their 21 senior classmates from the Buena Vista football team will remember Saturday afternoon's 35-14 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win for a long time.
Amick, a 6-1, 270-pound senior defensive lineman from Johnston, Iowa, recovered a fumble 26 seconds into the third quarter and returned it five yards for a touchdown in front of the Senior Day Crowd of 2,600 at J. Leslie Robbins Stadium.
Pierce, a 5-11, 194-pound senior linebacker from Spencer, Iowa, recorded 7 1/2 tackles and two tackles for loss. He hiked his season tackle total to 106 and also recorded one of the three sacks of quarterback Jermar Jackson.
Jackson was one of the IIAC's most exciting players, entering the game having passed for 1,646 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for 831 yards and 16 scores. He lived up to his billing, completing 21 of 41 passes for 177 yards and running 27 times for a game-high 133 yards and two touchdowns.
However, Buena Vista (5-4, 3-4 IIAC) enjoyed a balanced offensive attack, rushing for 181 yards, paced by Cory Donscheski, who had 125 and touchdown runs of six and 44 yards. Quarterback Chris Hawkins was sacked seven times, but passed for 124 yards and one score.
Buena Vista scored on two of its first three possessions. Alex Moss ran for a two-yard score to complete a 12-play, 70-yard drive, but Dubuque (6-3, 4-3) got a 15-yard touchdown run from Jackson to tie the game. However, late in the first frame, Trent Svendsen returned a punt 25 yards to the Dubuque 29 to launch a five-play drive that ended with Donscheski's six-yard touchdown run for a 14-7 lead.
Sophomore defensive tackle Austin Dickinson recovered a fumble to end the ensuing Dubuque series. Dubuque was held scoreless on its next eight offensive drives and fell behind 28-7 as Hawkins threw his 15th touchdown pass of the season, a 22-yarder to Kurt Hanna.
It was Buena Vista's 12th consecutive home win over Dubuque.
Buena Vista will conclude the regular season next Saturday at Simpson College.
