USD cross country team makes nationals

VERMILLION, S.D. - Paced by sophomore Ramsey Kavan's second-place time of 20:55.05, South Dakota's women's cross country team scored 115 points and qualified for the NCAA Division II national meet with a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Don Baker Memorial Course.

Kavan, a former Yankton (S.D.) High School standout, finished 11 seconds behind champion Tanya Gaurmer of Adams State (20:44.63). Coach Rob Kinnunen's Coyotes, who qualified for the national meet for the fifth time in eight seasons, had four other runners make the top 40.

Kelsey Maloney, a junior, placed 19th for the Coyotes in 22:10.33. South Dakota will also be represented at the national meet by freshman Emma Erickson (23rd, 22:16.64), freshman Sarah Wickman (35th, 22:35.83), junior Jessica Lundgren (40th, 22:50.27) and junior Allison Duba (60th, 23:23.88).

Adams State outscored Augustana 28-86 to win the women's title. Western State (86) and North Dakota (149) also qualified for the national meet, which will be held in Joplin, Mo., on Nov. 17.

Western State edged Adams State 45-46 to win the men's meet. Minnesota State-Mankato (89), Colorado Mines (97) and New Mexico Highlands (149) also advanced to the nationals.

Laurent Ngirakamar of New Mexico Highlands set a new course record, timed in 29:44.58.

South Dakota's men tallied 358 points. Matt Yaggie led the Coyotes with a 44th-place 32:49.
