It's early, but it's still a test.
Coach Jamie Sale's eighth-ranked Morningside College women's basketball team will travel to Madison, S.D., tonight for a key clash against 9th-rated Dakota State.
Each team enters with 2-0 records. Morningside won each of its games at last weekend's Jim Fox Invitational at Davenport, Iowa, while the highlight of Dakota State's season thus far was a 56-53 win over defending NAIA Division II national champion Hastings last Thursday.
Dakota State, an 87-75 winner over Morningside last season, returns each of its five starters from a squad that advanced to the Elite Eight of last year's Division II national tourney.
Jessica Van Loy, a 5-10 senior forward, leads the Lady T's with a 10-point scoring average. Laura Tewes, a 6-1 senior forward, averages 9.0 points and 8.5 rebounds wihle Angela Carr, a 5-6 senior, scores at a 9.5 clip.
Carr scored 13 points in last year's win over Morningside while Van Loy claimed 12 rebounds.
Brittany Williamson scored 17 points for Morningside in last year's loss to Dakota State. Williamson, a 6-foot sophomore forward from Ruthven, Iowa, leads the Mustangs with an 18.5 scoring average and ranks second on the team with a 7.0 rebound mark.
Sale's lineup will also include 5-10 junior Dani Gass (10.5 ppg, 9.0 rpg), 5-8 junior guard Autumn Bartel (14.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg), 5-11 sophomore guard Leslie Foal (2.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg) and 5-9 sophomore guard J.J. Hall (15.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg).
Morningside will host Viterbo in its home opener Friday night.
