SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- South Sioux City Councilman Jason Bowman will announce Tuesday that he is seeking the District 17 seat in the Nebraska Legislature.

Bowman's formal announcement is set for noon tomorrow at the South Ridge Golf Done in South Sioux City. Incumbent Sen. Pat Engel is prohibited by term limits from running for re-election to the non-partisan unicameral. District 17 includes Dakota, Wayne and Dixon counties.

Bowman, 38, is a life-long resident of South Sioux City and a third-term Council member, works as an union electrician. He graduated from South Sioux City Senior High School in 1988 and later served in the military in Operation Desert Storm. He attended classes through the University of Maryland before completing his Iowa Electrical Apprenticeship Program in 2000. He has worked as a union electrician since then.

A born-again Christian, he is married to Erica Bowman, a graduate of Bishop Heelan High School and Briar Cliff College. She has taught at Lewis and Clark Elementary School in South Sioux City for eight years and completed a master's degree in curriculum and instruction this year at Wayne State College.

The couple has two children, Morgan, 6, and Carter, 3.

Bowman's entrance into the race will trigger a May 13 primary election as it brings the number of candidates to three. He will face former fellow councilman Bob Giese, who is now the mayor of South Sioux City, and Doug Garwood, a South Sioux City Century farmer and businessman.
