Briar Cliff women's basketball takes Avila in classic

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Freshmen Carly Hansen and Michelle Determan combined for 51 points, leading Briar Cliff to a 90-72 women's basketball victory over Avila University in the Ryland Milner Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri State University here Friday.
Hansen, a West Des Moines Valley product and the daughter of former University of Iowa standout Bobby Hansen, fired in a career-high 27 points while Determan, who prepped at Lincoln Pius X, added 24 points. Hansen was 7 for 10 from three-point range as the Chargers made 15 of 30 long bombs.
"Carly came out hitting threes and did a lot of the dirty work, too, and Michelle did a good job of getting to the basket and finishing," said Briar Cliff Coach Mike Power. "The rest of the team kind of fed off those two.
"When we hit our threes, we're tough to play with, but we just haven't been doing that lately."
Senior guard Kayla Boyd tacked on 17 points in a reserve role, nailing five three-pointers, while Julia Hargrove came off the bench to contribute 10 points. Briar Cliff, now 2-3 overall, shot 33 of 66 from the field for an even 50 percent.
Ashley Townsend scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Avila, now 3-3 overall.
BCU bolted to a 49-30 halftime lead, but Avila fought back to within five points with six minutes remaining. After a Charger time out, Hansen and Boyd hit back-to-back threes and Briar Cliff pulled away.
"It was nice to see the kids have enough composure to bounce back after the time out," said Power. "This was a nice win for us."
Briar Cliff plays Evangel University at 3:30 p.m. here today.
