Evangel holds off Briar Cliff rally, 60-56

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Evangel University held off a second-half Briar Cliff rally here Saturday, edging the Chargers 60-56 in the Ryland Milner Classic women's basketball tournament.
Briar Cliff, now 3-4 overall, trailed 39-26 at halftime and was still down by 10 points (53-43) with 6:02 remaining in the game. Two free throws by Ashlee Luko gave Evangel a 57-51 lead with 44 seconds remaining.
BCU's Jamee Phipps, though, nailed a three-pointer with 31 ticks left and after another Evangel free throw, Michelle Determan's layup with 10 seconds remaining brought the Chargers within 58-56. Melissa Hogan iced the victory, making a pair of charity tosses with four seconds lefgt.
Determan, a freshman from Lincoln Pius X, led Briar Cliff with 14 points. Freshman Carly Hansen came off the bench to chip in 13 points while Kelsi Karokosh, yet another frosh, finished with 10 points.
Katie Burger of Evangel matched Determan for game-high honors with 14 points.
Briar Cliff defeated Avila 90-72 here Friday and will host Morningside on Tuesday at 6 o'clock.
