The state's volleyball player of the year comes from the Missouri River Activities Conference.
Brittany Ridenour, a senior setter from Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, won this honor this week from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. Ridenour, who provided 932 assists and 137 kills for a team that advanced to the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament, was also named the 4A player of the year.
Ridenour also headlines the MRAC all-conference squad that was selected by the conference's head coaches. The league champions were also represented on the first team by senior outside hitters Megan Smyser and Laura Sales.
Class 3A state champion Heelan was limited to one first-teamer, senior middle blocker Mindy Moody. North, which fell to Abraham Lincoln in the 4A regional final, put senior outside hitter Sarah Jane Bowden and junior libero Taylor Culver on the first team while East senior outside hitter Kaeli Austin completed the squad.
Moody, Bowden, Ridenour and Smyser made the first team for the second straight year. Ridenour also won first-team honors in 2005.
Moody was named the captain of the 3A all-tournament team shortly after Heelan capped a 39-16 season with a 25-20, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20 win over Mount Vernon in the state title match.
Moody, also a starter for the 2006 3A state championship squad, collected 39 kills in three matches at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. The Wayne State College recruit concluded the year with 457 kills, 336 digs and 59 ace serves.
Bowden and Culver played for a North squad that had a 24-18 record. Four of the Stars' losses were to CBAL.
Bowden, a University of Southern Mississippi volleyball recruit, had 323 kills, 60 solo blocks, 195 block assists, 153 digs and 38 ace serves.
Culver was an honorable mention selection last season. She recorded 447 digs.
Austin paced East (15-25) with 264 kills. She also contributed 219 digs, 41 ace serves, 18 solo blocks and 11 block assists.
Austin's teammate, junior middle hitter Emily McCarthy, made the second team. Another second-teamer, Baylee Strachen of North, was on the first team last year.
Two Heelan athletes also made the second team; senior setter Monica Iverson and senior outside hitter Kayla Karpuk. Each were honorable mention selections last year.
