ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Briar Cliff's men's basketball team still had a lot left in the tank for Saturday afternoon's game against Grace University at the Taco John's/Subway Classic.
Brett Ratcliff scored a season-high15 points while leading Briar Cliff to an 85-65 win over Grace at the Bultman Center on the Northwestern College campus.
Neil Rohe, who missed a last-second shot that would have given Briar Cliff a win over top-ranked Mid-America Nazarene on Friday night at the Taco John's/Subway Classic added 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Coach Todd Barry's Chargers. Casey Morgan came off the bench to score 13 points while Adi Cizmic tallied 12.
"We expanded a lot of energy and enthusiasm from that game on Friday night," said Barry. "I was proud we came back, grinded it out and got a win."
Rohe got a steal that led to a Morgan layup for a 10-6 lead at the 14:13 mark. The Chargers never lost the lead from that point and took their first double-digit advantage at 36-26 with 2:09 left before halftime on Ratcliff's three-point basket.
Paul Putz lifted Grace withtin 36-28 on a layup, but Kurt Webb hit a three for the Chargers and Ratcliff was fouled following a Cizmic steal. Ratcliff made the free throws for a 41-28 lead and from there, Briar Cliff didn't lose its double-figure lead.
Briar Cliff shot 59.2 percent in the first half and finished at 55.7 percent. Webb had four assists and four steals while Ratcliff grabbed six boards for a club that had a 40-33 rebound advantage.
Grace, led by Lamar McMorris' 22 points, shot just 36.2 percent.
Webb, Dehonis Williams, Kelvin Adams and Matt Geelan each recorded one blocked shot for the Chargers.
"I'm happy with our scoring balance and at the same time, I'm happy they shot 36 percent because that's a good reflection on our defense," said Barry. "We're giving it a great effort, but we need to spend time in the gym and get things worked out on the offensive end and the defensive end."
Briar Cliff will play at the University of Sioux Falls Wednesday night.
