New cartoon stars boy with two moms

Posted: Tuesday, November 27, 2007
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Two Omaha moms say their new cartoon series about a boy with two parents of the same gender is the first of its kind, and they hope it will help families like theirs with two moms or two dads.

The two women who created "Buddy G -- My Two Moms and Me" say the arrival of their own son six years ago inspired them to create the cartoon they announced Monday, so kids like their son would have something to relate to.

Executive producer Margaux Towne-Colley said she is proud of the cartoon and what it means to gay and lesbian families. But she said the show is great entertainment for anyone.

"While today's children have ready access to literature depicting families headed by parents of the same gender, this is the first time that children with two moms or two dads will able to see the star of a show with a family just like their families," Towne-Colley said.

Towne-Colley said she hasn't seen the finished DVD yet because an Austin, Texas, company did the animation work. But she said kids in her neighborhood liked the story boards for the cartoon.

And Towne-Colley said the company she and her spouse formed, Us 2 LLC, has already received a few hundred orders for the first episode DVD. She expects to have 5,000 copies of the DVD in hand by mid-December.

Most of the reaction to the cartoon so far has been positive, although Towne-Colley said she does expect some negative reaction.

"There's people out there who would like to pretend families like ours don't exist, but we do," Towne-Colley said.

The lead character of the cartoon, Buddy G, is a 5-year-old boy who loves science and uses a computer strapped to his arm to solve problems. A 7-year-old neighbor boy named Owen, who is fascinated with Elvis, is a regular character.

The first episode of the cartoon is supposed to teach lessons about the value of being truthful along with a few facts about how metal detectors work.

The cartoon's creators say future episodes will include other families including ones with two dads.

Towne-Colley said she would love to see their cartoon air on TV somewhere, but she doesn't expect that to happen soon.

"I don't know if Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel would be ready for this," Towne-Colley said.

Us2 LLC is selling a DVD of the first episode of "Buddy G" online at http://buddyg.tv for $10. The site also sells T-shirts and other "Buddy G" gear.
