Festival of Trees raises $13,500

Posted: Friday, November 30, 2007
SIOUX CITY -- The 15th annual Festival of Trees raised $13,500 for the Community Action Agency's Crossroads Shelter on Thursday at the Terra Centre.

More than 50 artificial trees, wreaths and centerpieces were auctioned off by the Sioux City Jaycees to benefit the non-profit organization, which needs to raise funds every year to partially match a $30,000 HUD grant, said Festival of Trees coordinator Tom Molstad.

The tree that received the top bid of $1,500 was donated by the Winnavegas Casino. The 9-foot flocked tree which appeared to be covered with snow featured characters from the movie "Shrek" as they help Santa Claus save Christmas.

In second place was the tree donated by Siouxland Woodworkers which earned $575. The tree featured 175 hand-made wooden ornaments.

The People's Choice Award went to the tree donated by the Sunrise Retirement Community which featured ornaments hand-decorated by Sunrise residents. The theme for the tree was "It's The Love." Second place went to the Winnavegas Casino tree. Taking third-place honors was a 9.5-foot tree from St. Luke's College with framed art and dream ornaments.

Among the firsts for this "unusual year" or the Festival of Trees was its first black tree, festooned with white lights and black and green ornaments, Molstad said. "We had the first red tree, and the tree itself is red, with red lights, and black, white and silver ornaments," he added.

" What a great project and outcome for the Crossroads Shelter. Congratulations to the Sioux City Jaycess, Iowa's first and finest Jaycee chapter that is alive and well despite what the Dakota Valley Jaycees say. "
