Professor says senator tough to beat

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A Northern State University professor said Democratic U.S. Senator Tim Johnson will be difficult to defeat if he seeks re-election next year.
Ken Blanchard said it'll be tough for the Republican nominee to attack Johnson, who is recovering from emergency brain surgery and still has trouble walking and talking.
"It is not that they can't get a strong candidate, but it is hard for them to even begin a campaign to unseat the incumbent you have to attack," he said. "How you attack someone like Johnson under the circumstances is like attacking a cripple."
Johnson has not made an official re-election announcement yet, but said he intends to run for another 6-year term.
Three Republicans have indicated an interest so far in running against the veteran senator.
