No. 1 Fresno Pacific sweeps Northwestern at NAIA nationals

Posted: Friday, November 30, 2007
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Losing to top-ranked Fresno Pacific didn't matter to Northwestern College's volleyball team Thursday afternoon.

Thanks to Pool A victories on Wednesday over Westminster and SUNY-Canton, the 10th-seeded Red Raiders are still alive at the NAIA national tournament.

Bobbie Jean Rich and Kaitlin Beaver each collected 10 kills for Northwestern in the 30-23, 30-19, 30-25 loss to Fresno Pacific, the final pool match for each team at Columbia College.

Northwestern (30-11) will face the loser of the Mobile/Campbellsville Pool D match this morning at 10:30. It's a play-in match to the quarterfinals.

The winner of this morning's match will face the Pool B champion, either California Baptist or Lewis-Clark, at 6 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.

The Red Raiders of Coach Kyle Van Den Bosch lost to Fresno Pacific for the second straight season at the national tournament. Fresno Pacific (34-1), which fell in four games to National American University in last year's final, had a .336 hitting percentage in the sweep, topped by Thais Julio, who hit .789 while slamming 15 kills.

Fresno Pacific won national titles in 1989 and 2003. In 1999, Fresno Pacific dropped a four-game title match to Columbia (Mo.).

Northwestern, a national tournament qualifier for the seventh time in school history, got seven kills from Megan Meyer, the Great Plains Athletic Conference's player of the year.

Setter Rachel Gosselink dished 33 assists. Janna Bloemendaal had 13 digs while Beaver had a match-high four ace serves.
