By supporting the president, we are supporting the troops

Posted: Sunday, December 02, 2007
CROFTON, Neb. -- I am responding to the Kathleen Parker column headlined “Traveling with the president: Bush reflects on his years in office, his legacy” which was published on Nov. 26.

The war in Iraq will have lasted five years this coming March. Throughout this five-year period the general public has been bombarded with nothing but images of violence and body counts from Iraq. It’s no wonder why we have seen President Bush’s approval ratings plummet as the American people express their ongoing disapproval of the war in Iraq. The majority of the American population has even lost their trust in President Bush’s ability to run this country as a September 2007 poll conducted by CNN indicates that only 36 percent of Americans approve Bush’s performance in office.

Although many of us may not like the decisions President Bush has made concerning the war in Iraq, I believe we need to continue to support him. By supporting President Bush we are ultimately supporting our troops overseas and this is of great importance because these are our loved ones and countrymen. We, as the American people, must look past all of the negative outcomes of this war and try to see the good so our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan know that they have our support. -- Ben Lancaster

" To maRK: In response to your question, of course I want us to win the war on terror. Had we continued to focus our efforts on that as opposed to invading Iraq it would have been much closer to reality by now. With the distraction of the Iraq war, our focus on the real war on terror was lost. "

" you do not need to stand behind the president to support the troops. your opinions do not make you left, right, liberal, right, wrong, or 100% USDA approved. The media lies to you, Talk radio tries to dissuade you to think one way or the other, justification of ones views is what started this all anyway. do not be a pompous, public-radio-told-me-so, i know you are but what am i, Rush told me to or not to, you must be one of the wings, political drama and media puppet. look at the facts and the situation to what really happened, why it is still happening, and why war results in nothing good. Look as a person with their own mind and stop thinking your delusions or biased opinions means you must be right before cutting down someone elses.. it's called being human. "

" Who are our allies JB? It differs from day to day. First we were supporting the Shi'tes. Then we were supporting some Sunni clerics and fighting some Shi'te groups. This is a war that cannot be won. If you look at the history of the Mideast you will see that change occurs slowly because of their religious beliefs. Our current strategy of rushing in a democracy will cause instability for many decades. "

" Unbelievable...why are libs so vested in defeat?? Why do libs feel that the Iraqi people do not deserve a chance to be free?? What will you do when we (our Iraqi allies and us) defeat the insurgency and our troops come home with their heads held high instead of with their heads down. Will a free and friendly Iraq be a defeat to you? And WHY?? I do not understand it!! By the way before you comment I am a vet who served 9 years and who was in Desert Storm (Wish we had finished it then). "

" s.o., you might want to look up statistical numbers on military support of the war in Iraq. A recent Bloomber/LA Times poll shows that among active-duty military, veterans and their families, only 36 percent say it was worth going to war in Iraq. The views of veterans and their families are now closer in line with overall public sentiment. The poll shows that 32 percent of the general population supports the war. I can't seem to find any information that shows there is 100% support for President Bush. Where can I find this s.o.? "
