Heelan dominates All-Metro football selections

It was a memorable season for the Bishop Heelan football team.
And, judging from The Sioux City Journal's 2007 All-Metro football selections, the Crusaders can look forward to another one next fall.
Ten Crusaders are among the 24 athletes honored on the All-Metro team today and no fewer than eight of them are underclassmen.
Heelan avenged its only regular season setback with a Class 3A state quarterfinal victory at Harlan, handing the Cyclones their first home defeat since 2000, and went on to finish 11-2, bowing to Keokuk in the 3A state title game.
Junior running back Brandon Wegher and sophomore quarterback Zach McCabe both enjoyed record-setting seasons as Coach Roger Jansen's Crusaders flourished both on offense and defense.
Wegher rushed for 31 touchdowns and a city-record 2,334 yards, surpassing the 2-year-old mark of East's Tre-Darrius Canady by 458 yards. Carrying 286 times, he averaged 8.16 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, the 6-5, 195-pound McCabe established what is believed to be a Heelan mark for passing yards in a season, completing 107 of 186 passes for 1,709 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Heelan's large All-Metro contingent includes top receiver Chase Weaver (30 catches for 391 yards) along with linebacker and fullback Chris Calvillo, a pair of senior leaders.
It also includes four junior linemen who were all two-way regulars -- Buckley Wright, Josh Geary, Josh Bousquet and Jake Skibinski -- along with tight end/linebacker Joel McCabe and defensive back Ben Rickord, two more juniors.
North, which reached the Class 4A playoffs for just the third time ever, has six All-Metro performers. Topping the list is senior quarterback Marcus James, a first-team all-stater at defensive back, where he is drawing considerable interest from college scouts.
James, named as a utility back, is honored along with offensive linemen Derek Kohn and Jamie Berg, defensive lineman Jake Longtin, kicker and linebacker Max Martin, and running back Michael Alcarez.
Alcarez, a transfer from Heelan, started the season as a backup to Anthony Tomscha, but he finished North's 7-3 campaign with 826 yards rushing, shouldering more of the load after Tomscha was sidelined by a mid-season knee injury.
East's All-Metro selections are junior wide receiver Jared Barth, sophomore defensive back and wide receiver Britt Anderson, and senior linebacker Colton Newcomb.
Representing West are defensive lineman Charlie Murphy, linebacker C.J. Nolen and defensive back Justin Collins.
South Sioux City's All-Metro performers are offensive lineman Alex Rapp and running back Angel DeLaO.
