SIOUX CITY -- Those sad puppy eyes were too much to resist for five Heelen High School alums.
The five Siouxland residents made a combined bid of $20,000 to walk away with a male golden retriever named Brubeck on Saturday at the 72nd annual Little Yellow Dog auction.
The winning bidders were D.A. Davis, Roger Miller, Leonard Gill, Paul Braunger and Bill Barkley. Davis said he was going to give the dog to the two daughters of Holly and Rod Brown in Ponca, Neb. The family hadn't been made aware of the gift by Saturday evening, Davis said.
The group didn't come to the auction together and didn't plan on bidding until Gill suggested it.
"It's all about helping kids," Gill said, adding that it was his first dog auction.
Gill said it was the second time Davis and Miller had won the auction.
Donations as high as $6,000 were collected for the Mr. Goodfellow fund during the auction. In total, the auction raised $45,580, including the $20,000 for Brubeck. In 2006, a dog named Belle garnered the highest-ever Little Yellow Dog auction bid at $30,000.
The Ancient and Effervescent Order of Little Yellow Dogs hosted the auction for the Journal's Mr. Goodfellow Charities, which gives holiday toys and candy to about 7,000 area children who would otherwise go without.
The charity has raised $82,844 so far this season.
Roach Animal Hospital receptionist Kathy Salmon said Brubeck was a star during Saturday's auction, kissing many who gathered in the atrium in the Terra Centre. Brubeck, described as having sad eyes, is from Kimball, Minn.
Salmon, who was in charge of showing off Brubeck, said the puppy could reach 80 to 90 pounds. She kept him in her home with her two dogs after he was selected to be a part of the auction.
"He was in doggie heaven," Salmon said. "He's got a great personality."
Attendees Lynda Miller and her son Daniel didn't bid Saturday but said they love to look at the dog. Saturday was the fourth time Lynda Miller has attended the auction.
"It wouldn't seem like Christmas without a little yellow dog," Miller said.
