Briar Cliff, 13+ Program mark milestone

Posted: Tuesday, December 18, 2007
SIOUX CITY -- Briar Cliff University today will mark the 13-year anniversary since students with special needs in the Year 13+ Program, coordinated by Roxanne Ellis, expanded their learning to the Briar Cliff campus.

Today's celebration will take place from 10:40 a.m. until noon in the Stark Student Center on campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Based at the Sioux City Community School District’s Central Campus, 1121 Jackson St., Year 13+ is a program for people with disabilities, ages 18 to 21. The program focuses on developing students' abilities in adult living, working and leisure situations in preparation for competitive employment opportunities.

Since 1995, Year 13+ students have boarded Sioux City transit buses every Tuesday morning to travel to the Briar Cliff campus where they take part in an adapted physical education class in Newman Flanagan Center.

In the health, physical education and recreation class, now led by Heather Hupke, assistant professor, and with assistance from Briar Cliff students, Year 13+ participants receive training on various physical activities, including preparation for Special Olympics.

"Tuesday is the highlight of our students' week," Ellis said. "They love coming to Briar Cliff where they feel welcomed and the university students are so good to them."

Hupke and Ellis envision the partnership expanding beyond 13 years with more Briar Cliff students involved with Year 13+ students, such as eating lunch together, bringing Year 13+ students to campus for other events and activities throughout the academic year and volunteering in the Year13+ Program through tutoring.
